MARTIN TIP
Place your house in the most open location available to you, with at least 15 feet of clearance in every direction from buildings, trees, and other vegetation. Martins like flying room around their houses.
The Penthouse
Why crescent shaped entrance holes and 2 round holes?

Mixing the new & some of the old

For years 2-1/8" round hole was recommended for purple martin houses. A hole this size works for martins - but also works for starlings, sparrows, blue birds, woodpeckers, hawks, owls, squirrels, snakes and other predators.
Crescent Shaped Holes THE PENTHOUSE by Mr. Birdhouse offers 8 crescent shaped entrances and 2 original round entrances.

The round holes are still used by many purple martin landlords, because the martins are familiar with the round holes.

Usually martins will occupy the crescent entrances first, but young, inexperienced martins may prefer the round holes.

Should starlings attempt to enter a round hole, the martins will often band together and force the starling out.
